SINCIERE Vision:

  • To act as a catalyst and mediator for cooperation between China and Norway in the field of interdisciplinary environmental research
  • To facilitate policy relevant, high quality and integrated interdisciplinary research
  • To serve as a node for a strong Sino-Norwegian network of research institutions hosting a multidisciplinary community of researchers.
  • To contribute to sustainable and balanced development goals

SINCIERE is a research center based on a bilateral agreement between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) and the University of Oslo in Norway (UiO) and Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research (CIENS).  The main goal of SINCIERE partners interdisciplinary and policy oriented research and knowledge production is to contribute to the objectives of Chinese and Norwegian policy for the benefit of sustainable and balanced development and a harmonious society.

"Sustainability is about meeting the needs or helping to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet those needs" (Our Common Future - The Brundtland report).

Environmental abatement actions need to be balanced against limitations posed by social harmony and economic production.  Integrated holistic assessment studies of the ways pollution and inadequate resource management affect the environment and humans are required to provide a scientific foundation for knowledge-based management.  Today’s environmental challenges demand therefore adequate and knowledge-based responses.
